Supporting Families Through Food: New 6-Week Cooking Course Launches in Bridgwater
Sedgemoor Community Connector CIC is launching a new 6-week family cooking course at The Rollercoaster on Parkway, designed to support families to build confidence, skills and positive routines around food.
This hands-on programme brings families together in a relaxed and supportive environment, where they will cook, eat and learn alongside one another. The focus is not just on preparing meals, but on building lasting skills that can be taken home and used every day.
Across the six weeks, families will learn how to:
Cook simple, healthy meals from scratch
Make food choices that are both nutritious and affordable
Manage food budgets more effectively
Work together in the kitchen as a family
Each session is designed to be practical and accessible. Families will prepare meals together and will also take home ingredients, helping to build confidence beyond the sessions and into everyday life.
The course has been carefully structured to support a wide range of needs. The first session focuses on building confidence, hygiene and kitchen safety in a no-cook environment, allowing facilitators to understand the group before introducing cooking equipment in later weeks. From there, families will gradually develop skills including chopping, using the hob, preparing balanced meals and following simple recipes.
This is a preventative, early support approach — helping families develop the skills, confidence and routines that can have a lasting impact on health, wellbeing and household resilience.
Who is the course for?
The course is open to families with children aged 7 and above. A parent or carer must attend alongside their child, and families are asked to commit to the full six-week programme to get the most benefit.
Families must also be able to travel to The Rollercoaster on Parkway for each session.
Getting involved
There are currently a limited number of spaces available. If you are a family who would like to take part, or a professional working with a family who may benefit, we would love to hear from you.
